April 2012 Calendar
Lent / Palm Sunday / Holy Week & Holy Hilarity Sunday
During Lent we have been learning in Tuesday night bible studies, about spiritual adventures - different kinds of devotional practices & ideas to encourage regular practice of contemplation and prayer to encourage a deepening faith.
4/1/12 - Palm Sunday - Marks the beginning of Holy Week and is a celebration about Jesus' ride into Jerusalem on a colt, fulfilling the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9 ("Shout and cheer, Daughter Zion! Raise the roof, Daughter Jerusalem! Your king is coming! A good king who makes all things right, a humble king riding a donkey, a mere colt of a donkey.") The people greeted him as though he were an earthly king; they were sure he would end the Roman occupation and Jerusalem would again be a Jewish city. They shouted, "Hosanna," which means "save us". Jesus’ purpose in riding into Jerusalem was to make public His claim to be their Messiah and King of Israel in fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. The palms were waived and laid on the ground for the donkey to be walked upon. Join us for worship at 10:30 am then after a coffee hour and table talk to futher information gathering for FCC transformation and fellowship.
4/5/12 - Maunday Thursday - is the name given to the day on which Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples, known as the Last Supper also called Communion - FCC celebrates an open communion (means everyone is welcome). The “Maundy” in Maundy Thursday is command in latin - it refers to the command Jesus gave to the disciples at the Last Supper, that they should love and serve one another. FCC will have a soup supper at 6:00 pm then a worship service at 7:00 pm.
4/6/12 - Good Friday - is remembered as the day on which Jesus was crucified. Why is this "good"? It is called Good Friday because the results of God sacrificing his only son for sinners - it is "good" that this demmonstrates God's love for us. There will be a community service at First Presbyterian Church at Contance and State streets in Santa Barbara, starting at noon.
4/8/12 - Easter Sunday - also known as Resurrection Sunday - This day is a celebration that Jesus lives - this knowledge of renewal may be why the day is often celebrated with bunnies, eggs, baby chicks and lambs but also has been celebrated with butterflies and often people choose to be baptised on Easter as well - all this is to celebrate and not distract from knowing the fact that Jesus was resurrected from the dead, and that His resurrection demonstrates that we can indeed be promised an eternal home in Heaven by receiving Jesus as our Savior. Worship is at 10:30 am and we will have a combined FCC and Grace Community Adventist church choir singing.
4/15/12 Holy Hilarity Sunday - an ancient practice of seeing the Sunday after Easter as a time to celebrate the great joke God played on sin and death by raising Jesus from the dead. An occasion for people to join in praise, laughter, and good humor in celebrating God's love for us, with singing silly songs, the members dressing outlandishly and the preacher serving outlandish humor from the pulpit. Worship is at 10:30 am.
4/22/12 - Earth Day - did you know that Earth day was inspired by the massive oil spill that happened in Santa Barbara in 1969? Started on April 22, 1970 The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts.
4/29/12 - Earth Stewardship Sunday - Stewardship is the the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care - For example stewardship of our natural resources - the earth - often a day to encourage eco-friendly activities.
